Auto Security Systems Not
The Only Way To Prevent Theft
By Brad Seabourne
When it comes to making your vehicle theft proof there are
several ways to keep your property safe.
While nearly all
antitheft devices claim to work
better than others, vehicle security devices are
just one way to protect your automobile. Surprisingly, auto
security systems are just part of the answer.
Common sense is your best defense against auto theft. Make sure
that you never leave your keys in the car; do not be tempted to use
hide-a-key devices. Always lock every car door and roll up all
windows, and park the car in a well-lit and secure place.
Thieves don't like to work hard to steal things, so as long as
you make it difficult to steal your car, they are unlikely to try
it.
Auto security systems can also be an excellent theft deterrent.
And, contrary to what the auto security systems makers
will tell you, it may not matter which one you use. If you
choose to go this route for theft protection, it is important
that you find a security system that is a good fit for you. It
has to be a security system you will actually use
consistently.
GPS tracking devices can help police locate your vehicle if it
has been stolen, and are difficult for thieves to deactivate. For
this reason, they can act as deterrent devices, simply because they
make it so easy for police to recover your vehicle.
To make effective deterrents, just make sure that you use a
window sticker or some other means to clearly indentify your
automobile as being armed with a GPS tracking device.
Having the VIN number etched into the glass is another way that
a car can be tracked if it is stolen and the car is
sold for parts. If a thief sees these numbers etched into the
glass, they will be more likely to move onto the next car.
Some makes and models of vehicles are more likely to be stolen
than others. Many car magazines will list the cars most likely to
be stolen each year. Vehicles on such a list should not be
purchased. These kinds of cars seem to attract thieves, and auto
security systems may not be enough to keep thieves away.

windows, as well as removing the keys from the car are important,
as is parking in a safe well-lit area.
