Contrary to common belief, according to this article by Ivonne, the SUVs, despite the size and weight, seems to post more danger to the passengers, mainly because of roll-over risk which could result in, commonly, head / neck / brain and spinal injuries.

Most people tend to consider only the exterior qualities when
buying a car. They sometimes fail to check the safety features
and vulnerability of a car during accidents.
Most buyers are unaware that there are vehicles out in the
market that poses more risks than others. We should always
consider our safety first and know the risks involved in buying
the desired type of vehicle.
Sports Utility Vehicles attract many vehicle buyers because of
its sturdy and elegant look. But, a study has shown that people
inside an SUV is three times more likely to be killed in an
accident than occupants of other types of vehicle.
These SUV Roll over Injury-related deaths have brought much pain
and distress to families and have cost negligent parties a bulk
of money for compensation. Because of this, we must be more
careful in choosing the type of vehicle to use and the take
extra caution in driving them.
SUV Rollovers
Every vehicle is in danger of rollovers. They happen when
drivers loss control of their vehicle. These usually result from
miscalculation of a turn or wrong application of breaks.
According to a study, vehicles that are built lower or closer to
the grounds are safer from rollover accidents. SUVs, however,
are not one of these vehicles. It is built with higher center of
gravity from the ground and so it is three times more likely to
be involved in a rollover accident.
The number of rollover accidents has increased as more and more
people in the nation purchase SUVs which are classified as light
truck vehicles. Occupants of an SUV that has rolled over can
also be victims of car defects like faulty seatbelts and roof
crash.
