While the temptation is great to save time and money by bidding online, and the savings can be quite impressive, there are a few tips you should know before jumping into bidding on that Mazda that's caught your eye. If you've never participated in a car auction online, these tips could save you money and keep you from getting scammed.

1. Regardless of whether you're looking for a Mazda in particular or just browsing to see what's available, look for auctions that offer as many pictures as possible. Since you're not able to see the car in person, it's important that the buyer show you the car from every angle, including the interior, the trunk area and the motor. Photos should be clear and taken close enough to show details.

2. Make sure the buyer provides the VIN. The Vehicle Identification Number will allow you check out the car's history. Get a CARFAX vehicle history report if possible. This will let you know if the car has been involved in a wreck or been flooded and other vital facts that could influence your decision. 

3. Know beforehand how much you plan to spend. Too often people get caught up in the fever of bidding and wind up placing a bid before realizing it's more than what they can afford. If you place the winning bid, you're obligated to pay, so it's important to plan ahead of time what your top bid will be. If you lose the auction, don't dwell on it, just get busy and find another one more within your reach.

4. Consider the location of the Mazda or any other car you're bidding on when setting your high bid. Depending on where it's located, the cost of shipping may be great. Ideally you'll be able to find a car close enough to where you live that you can pick it up, but realistically that's not always possible.

5. Take note as to whether the seller has a reserve placed on the car. Not all sellers do this, but some will and what it means to you as the buyer is that the seller has a certain price that must be met before he will actually sell the car. Vehicles with a reserve will usually have a notice posted prominently to let prospective buyers know the seller has a reserve price on this car. If his reserve is not met, the seller has the option of selling it to the highest bidder anyway, or refusing to sell and re-listing it until his price is met.

6. Pay attention to the reputation of the seller. They all have a rating and it's usually a good idea to buy from a seller with high ratings and good feedback. Used car sales are open to fraud, so exercise caution. You should take as much care choosing a seller as you do selecting a car to bid on.

7. Think carefully before you click that bid button. All bids are considered legal and binding and if you win, you're legally obligated to fulfill your promise to purchase and failure to comply could result in a legal battle between you and the seller.
